Tampa has two of the best clothing-optional lifestyle resorts in the country sitting within 30 minutes of downtown. Both are gated, both require membership and both have been welcoming couples for decades. If you are trying to decide which one to visit first, or whether one is worth making your regular spot, this breakdown covers everything you need to know.
The Basic Difference in Vibe
This is the most important thing to understand before you look at any other detail.
Caliente Club and Resorts in Land O Lakes is a full luxury resort. The property has a Caribbean feel, a polished and well-maintained environment and an upscale energy that carries through everything from the pools to the dining to the nightclub. When you drive through the gate at Caliente you feel like you are checking into a destination resort.
Paradise Lakes Resort in Lutz is a 72-acre community resort that has been running since the 1980s. The vibe is laid-back Florida. Cold drinks, friendly people, four heated pools and zero pretension. Paradise Lakes has the feel of a place where people have been coming back for years and know each other by name.
Neither is better than the other. They are genuinely different experiences and knowing which one fits your personality will save you from showing up somewhere that is not quite what you were expecting.
Location & Getting There
Both resorts are north of Tampa on US-41 and easy to reach from most parts of the city.
Caliente is in Land O Lakes at 21240 Gran Via Blvd, approximately 30 minutes north of downtown Tampa. Take Veterans Expressway north to Dale Mabry Highway and continue north on US-41 past the SR-54 intersection. Tampa International Airport is about 20 miles away.
Paradise Lakes is in Lutz at 2001 Paradise Lakes Blvd, about 20 miles north of Tampa International Airport. The drive from downtown Tampa takes around 25 minutes depending on traffic. Also accessible from US-41 heading north through Lutz.
If you are coming from Tampa proper, Paradise Lakes is slightly closer. If you are flying in, both are a similar distance from the airport.
Day Pass Pricing Compared
For couples visiting on a day pass, the price difference between the two resorts is worth knowing before you go.
On a Friday, a couples all-day pass at Caliente runs $140. The night pass from 6pm is $70. At Paradise Lakes a Friday all-day pass for couples is $90 and the night pass is $20. On Saturdays the pricing is similar at $140 all-day at Caliente versus $90 all-day at Paradise Lakes.
Sunday is where Paradise Lakes gets particularly attractive for budget-conscious visitors. Couples all-day on a Sunday is $40 at Paradise Lakes versus $50 at Caliente.
Paradise Lakes also has a first weekend of the month pricing structure that brings couples day pass rates down further at $55 all-day on the first Friday and $65 all-day on the first Saturday of each month. If your first visit happens to fall on a first weekend that is a solid way to experience the resort at a lower entry cost.
Both resorts require membership to visit. Day passes are available at both without a long-term commitment.
Pools & Recreation
Both resorts are built around their pool areas and both deliver on that front.
Caliente has five pools including a quarter-acre lagoon pool with a waterfall that serves as the centerpiece of the property, an oversized conversation pool, a Tiki Pool with bar access, two water volleyball pools and an oversized hot tub. On top of that there are tennis and pickleball courts, sand volleyball and a two-mile walking trail throughout the resort grounds.
Paradise Lakes has four heated pools year-round including a main pool, a conversation pool, two water volleyball pools and a hot tub. The water volleyball culture at Paradise Lakes is a genuine tradition at the resort with separate pools for newcomers and veteran players. There are also six newly rebuilt pickleball courts on property.
Both resorts have strong pool programs. Caliente has more variety and a more dramatic main pool setup. Paradise Lakes has a more active sports culture particularly around water volleyball and pickleball.
Accommodations
This is one of the clearest differences between the two resorts.
Caliente has a full range of accommodation types. Hotel rooms are 320 sq ft with a king bed, mirrored ceiling, mini-fridge, microwave and a balcony overlooking the resort. One-bedroom condos run 750 sq ft with a full kitchen and living area. Two-bedroom condos are 1,128 sq ft. Casitas are 540+ sq ft modular homes with a queen bed, sleeper sofa and private patio. Check-in is at 4:30pm and check-out is at 10:30am.
Paradise Lakes hotel rooms are poolside with a king bed, dresser, vanity, sink, shower and bathroom. Simple, well-located and just steps from the Key West Bar and the pools. Rooms run $115 per night Sunday through Thursday and $155 Friday and Saturday, not including resort fees.
If you want options for how you stay and a range of accommodation sizes, Caliente is the stronger choice. If you want a simple poolside room at a straightforward price point, Paradise Lakes delivers that cleanly.
Dining & Nightlife
Caliente has a fuller on-property dining program. There is a fine dining restaurant serving upscale entrees including filet mignon, Atlantic salmon and jumbo shrimp scampi alongside an extensive cocktail and wine list. There is also a Sports Bar, a poolside Tiki Bar, a Grotto Bar near the lagoon pool and breakfast service for resort guests. The Fiesta Nightclub runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday with a DJ until 3am.
Paradise Lakes keeps it more casual. The Key West Bar and Grill is the poolside hub with cold drinks, casual food and a relaxed no-shoes atmosphere. Water’s Edge Bar and Grill is the indoor option with top-shelf bar service and weekend breakfast. Club Reveal is the on-site nightclub open Friday and Saturday from 8pm with resident DJs and VIP booth reservations available.
For couples who want a proper dinner out as part of their resort experience, Caliente has the edge. For couples who want a cold beer by the pool and a night out at a good club, Paradise Lakes covers that well.
The Spa Factor
This one is straightforward. Caliente has The Retreat Med Spa on property offering professional massage therapy, facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, micro-needling and full body waxing for all genders. The spa runs Thursday through Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 11am to 5pm. Appointments can be booked at calienteretreat.com or by calling (813) 996-3700 Ext. 5.
Paradise Lakes does not have an on-site spa.
If a spa day is part of how you want to spend a resort weekend, Caliente is the only option between the two.
Annual Membership Costs
For couples who plan to visit regularly an annual membership makes more financial sense than paying day pass rates every time.
At Caliente the Preferred Couple annual membership is $3,400 plus tax. A Vacation Club Membership which gives a lower tier of access is $990 plus tax. All annual memberships include a $75 background check fee.
At Paradise Lakes a 12-month non-resident couples membership is $2,000. A 6-month couples membership is $1,400 and a 3-month option is $750. Annual members at Paradise Lakes receive a 10% discount on all purchases on property which adds up over time.
For couples who visit frequently, Paradise Lakes has lower annual membership costs. Caliente’s annual membership price reflects the fuller resort experience and amenities that come with it.
Which Resort is Right for You
Here is a practical breakdown based on what you are looking for:
Go to Caliente if you want a luxury resort experience, a full dining program, a spa day as part of your visit, a wider range of accommodation options or you are planning a longer stay where amenities matter more over several days.
Go to Paradise Lakes if you want a more affordable entry point for a first visit, a laid-back community atmosphere, a strong pool and sports culture, a simpler hotel room close to the pools or you are visiting on a Sunday or a first weekend of the month when pricing is particularly good.
Go to both if you want to see what Tampa’s lifestyle resort scene is really about. Many couples in the Tampa community rotate between the two depending on the occasion. A weeknight dinner and nightclub night at Caliente feels different from a sunny Saturday at Paradise Lakes and both are worth experiencing on their own terms.
